Kris Mayes, a ’90 Flinn Scholar, has been named the Director of Communications for Arizona Governor-Elect Janet Napolitano. Mayes served as the press secretary for Napolitano’s successful campaign.

Mayes will handle the assignment while juggling her third year of law school at Arizona State University, as she did with her campaign duties. Before attending law school, she covered the legislature for the Arizona Republic and also reported for the Phoenix Gazette. She received a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University.

As an undergraduate, Mayes served as editor of the State Press at ASU as well as an internship with the Johannesburg Star in South Africa, which included assignments covering political and civil unrest in the days of apartheid. Mayes graduated summa cum laude in 1994 with a degree in political science. She won a Truman Scholarship and was named the Outstanding Graduate in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
