The Flinn Foundation has announced its support for the inaugural Arizona Science and Technology (SciTech) Festival, a six-week event in cities and towns across Arizona that will showcase innovation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). During the recessionary years of 2008-09, bioscience jobs in Arizona grew by 7 percent while Arizona’s overall private sector lost 11 percent of its jobs, according to a new performance analysis of Arizona’s bioscience sector, commissioned by the Flinn Foundation. The annual study by the Battelle Technology Partnership Practice found that Arizona continues to outpace the nation in generating bioscience jobs and firms, and the state has reached an all-time high in grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health.
Recognizing Arizona’s strides in building a thriving biosciences sector, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has issued an official proclamation to declare Wednesday, October 27, 2010, as Arizona Bioscience Day. The designated day coincides with one of Arizona’s major annual bioscience events, BioFest 2010, hosted by the Arizona BioIndustry Association on October 27 at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale.

Twenty of Arizona's most accomplished high-school seniors have been announced as recipients of the Flinn Scholarship, one of the most competitive and prestigious undergraduate awards in the nation. The students, who constitute the 25th class of Flinn Scholars, will attend one of Arizona's three public universities with a truly comprehensive package of support that includes tuition, room and board, personal mentorship by top faculty, and funding for international study and research. The Scholarship is worth more than $54,000--on top of the value of tuition.
