TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) – Middle school students in the Sunnyside District are discovering the wonders of our solar system with their brand new telescopes.  The students participated in Raytheon’s MathMoves U program at the University of Arizona today.

Organizers gave 500 students their own Galileoscopes they had to build from a kit.  Galileoscopes are similar to the telescope Galileo built many years ago to study the heavens.  The whole idea of MathMoves U is to get kids excited about math and science.

Raytheon’s Don McMonagle said, “Some of these children have never had the opportunity to latch on to some hardware associated with technologies. The telescope they are receiving today may be their first entre into understanding how science relates to technology and engineering.”

The students get to keep the telescopes and tripods.
