Monsanto Company will open a cotton research and development facility in Casa Grande, with related operations in Eloy and Maricopa, the Central Arizona Regional Economic Development Foundation announced Tuesday.

Monsanto has completed the purchase of a 40,000-square-foot building on Casa Grande’s southwest side at 749 W. Ash Ave. The facility was begun in 2008 and completed in 2009, intended as a Pepsi distribution center, but was never occupied. The site eventually is to have 50 full-time employees. Research done at the site will include seed increase and field testing for cotton breeding programs, and to support the company’s extensive yield and stress pipeline. Monsanto hopes to begin operations in the building by late this year.
