Firms using algae to replace petroleum

Two companies, PetroAlgae LLC and Heliae Development LLC, have spun off in the past several years from algae-based technology at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus in Mesa.

Milton Sommerfeld, professor of biology at ASU’s Laboratory for Algae Research and Biotechnology, said the technology is based on special strains of algae that produce oils used to make biofuels.
